Marking
the 70th anniversary of
Soviet mass deportations from eastern Poland
Saturday 16th October 2010, 7pm
In 1940 the Soviet Union began the deportation of around 1.7 million Poles
from their homes in Poland to sites of exile in the far reaches of the
Soviet Union. Entire towns and communities were brutally deported to Siberia
and Kazakhstan to Soviet forced labour camps. At least half were to perish
from disease, starvation, and the harsh conditions.
The
Sikorski Polish Club is holding an event to mark the 70th anniversary
of these tragic times. Our main speaker will be Martin Stepek who will tell
the story of his own family's deportation experiences.
Consul General Tomasz Trafas will be presenting the Siberian Cross award
to five surviving members of our community who all suffered as a result
of these deportations.
There are a limited number of invitations for this free event. Anyone wishing
to attend can apply for an invitation by emailing admin@sikorskipolishclub.org.uk.
It would be helpful if you could give a reason for your interest in attending.
Priority will be given to Sikorski Polish Club members.

Campaign to restore General Maczek's great Polish map of Scotland
General Maczek's Great
Polish Map of Scotland stands in the grounds of Barony Castle, Eddleston,
once the home of the Murrays of Elibank, later the Black Barony Hotel. In
the war years the house and grounds seem to have been in use by Polish forces,
and some say an outdoor outline map was one of the features used to help
plan the defence of the Scottish coastline which was under threat of invasion
after the fall of Norway. Although returned to hotel use in the forties,
years later the hotel came into the hands of a member of the Polish community
who had been billeted there in wartime. He was a great friend of the General,
gave the Maczeks the use of a suite in the hotel, and set about restoring
and enhancing some of its water features.
The
Kresy-Siberia Virtual Museum Now Open
The Russians deported up to 2 million Polish people from
Poland, from the Kresy, the Eastern borderlands, on the orders of Stalin
himself in 1940, removing people to slave labour camps, gulags, in Siberia
and other parts of Eastern Asia. This site is dedicated to research, remembrance
and recognition of the Polish citizens deported, imprisoned and killed by
the Soviet regime during the Second World War.
The museum is a unique,
web-based, multi-media experience to commemorate and educate about the
experience of these Polish Citizens during and after World War II. Once
fully operational it will present stories through words, photos, paintings,
maps, sounds, films and interviews for a compelling visitor experiences.
If you or a member of your familly lived through experience of Siberia
please get in touch with the Foundation
Kresy-Syberia to share your memories and contribute to the creation
of the Kresy-Siberia Virtual Museum.

The
Wojtek Memorial Trust Fund
Wojtek - dubbed the "Soldier Bear" - was adopted by Polish troops
and helped them carry ammunition at the Battle of Monte Cassino. After the
war he lived in Scotland at Hutton in Berwickshire, before ending his days
in Edinburgh Zoo.
Aileen Orr, who lives in Hutton, is campaigning for a memorial. "The
story is totally amazing and it would be good if we could have some memorial
in Scotland, perhaps at Holyrood, to celebrate the bear's life," she
said.
She has now established the Wojtek Memorial Fund and anyone who wishes
to donate can now do to the following:
Cheques can be sent to: Gavin G. R. McEwan, Senior Associate, Deputy Head,
Charities Legal Team, Turcan Connell, Princes Exchange, 1 Earl Grey Street,
Edinburgh EH3 9EE.
Payable to: Princes Exchange Foundation.
If the donor is a UK taxpayer and wishes to make a donation under the Gift
Aid scheme, complete the Gift
Aid declaration and send that with the cheque, along with a letter stating
the donation is for the
Wojtek Memorial Fund.
